Astronomy
This etching, entitled 'Astronomy', depicts a group of three women and five men in an idealised setting of classical ruins discussing astronomy, or looking at astronomical instruments. The instruments depicted are a number of hand-held telescopes, an armillary sphere, a celestial globe, divers, a set square and back-staff. It displays astronomy as polite knowledge, suitable for the entertainment and instruction of young ladies as well as gentlemen. The print, one of a series depicting the arts and sciences, was printed for and sold by F.Bull on Ludgate Hill, J.Boydell in Cheapside and W.Herbert on London Bridge.
